What
a wonderful day! Today was our big field trip to UMASS to visit Al Richmond, a
professor in the biology department. Our theme of the day was cold-blooded
creatures, so we learned all about reptiles and amphibians and the adaptations
that help them survive.
For
our outside game we played none other than Lizard Tails! Then we came inside
and shared home projects. Some people brought in paper airplanes they made,
others brought in feathers they found – all related to flight.
We
discussed the reptiles and amphibians we know about, and our password –
herpetology (the study of reptiles and amphibians). Then it was time for snack,
and then, our bus ride to UMASS!
We
all sat at the desks in Al’s classroom and he brought out live herps such as...
Cane Toad
Corn Snake (albino)
Corn Snake (no black pigment)
Sissalids (the other amphibian besides frogs, toads and salamanders!)
Turtle Shell/Skeleton
Leopard Gecko
Corn Snake (with all pigment)
More Corn Snakes
Milk Snakes
Argentine Boa
Alligator
Reticulated Python - 17 feet long!)
Then
we went to the Campus Pond and had lunch. And we fed the ducks!
Then we came back for journal time and a game of frogs and
flies!
